What is a Matter in OctoGenie?
A matter is any legal problem or task that a client brings to a lawyer. The Matter feature in the OctoGenie platform helps you manage, organize, and track all your legal matters in one place.
Examples of legal matters:
- Filing a lawsuit
- Drafting a contract
- Registering a trademark
- Giving legal advice
- Managing a property dispute
How to Create a New Matter

Creating a New Matter
Follow these steps to create a new matter
Log in to OctoGenie
Log in to your OctoGenie account at partner.octogenie.com

Navigate to Matters
From the left-hand menu, click on Matters.

Click Add New Matter
On the top-right side of the page, click the 'Add New Matter' button. This will open the 'Create New Matter' form.

Enter Matter Details
On the Create New Matter form, click on 'Matter Details' to provide the basic information about the matter.
Add Parties & Contacts
Click on the 'Parties & Contacts' button in the Create New Matter form to add the parties involved and their contact details.

Set Assignment & Status
Set the assignment, status, and additional matter details by clicking on the 'Assignment & Status' section in the Create New Matter form.

Upload Documents and Create
Click on the 'Relevant Documents' section in the Create New Matter form to upload files related to this matter and then click on the 'Create Matter' button at the right bottom.
Expected Outcome
The matter is successfully created and appears in your Matters list.

Go to Matters Section
Go to the Matter section from the main menu.

Open Matter
Open the matter to which you want to add a client.

Click Assignment & Status
Click on Assignment & Status tab.
Select Client
From the Add Client field, select the required client from the list.
Expected Outcome
The client is successfully linked to the matter.

Open Matter
Open the matter for which you want to update the status.

Click Assignment & Status
Click on Assignment & Status tab.

Update Status
Update the status from the status field dropdown.
Expected Outcome
Matter status is successfully updated.
